Across New York, families are navigating a period of uncertainty. City systems are strained, benefits are becoming harder to access, and many immigrants and refugees are arriving after long and difficult journeys. Newcomers are rebuilding their lives without the networks or resources that immigrant families have historically relied on. Yet, moments of stability and connection continue to emerge inside AAFSC community spaces.
Adil is one of the many New Yorkers working to start again. He is a 24-year-old Sudanese immigrant with a master’s degree in data analytics. He arrived to New York alone after war upended the safety and opportunity he once knew, and the language barrier quickly became an obstacle that made every task more difficult.
Through AAFSC’s English language classes, supported by donors like you, Adil found a space where rebuilding felt possible and where support was consistent and dependable. Learning English opened new doors for Adil. He feels proud when he can communicate confidently when picking up medicine at the pharmacy, shopping for his meals at the supermarket, ordering his favorite foods, and communicating with his doctor. Adil’s time at AAFSC has also fueled his ambition to work in security, and he has proudly just landed a job.
For Adil, success is about feeling understood, making lasting friendships, and being part of a supportive community. His experience reflects a broader trend we are seeing across the city. Even as families face rising hardship, there is renewed energy to recommit to a shared belief that New York can remain a place of belonging and safety for all. Grateful for everyone who has helped him along the way, Adil credits AAFSC with changing his life. That gratitude is reflected in a drawing he created of our Associate Director of Readiness Initiatives, shown in the photo standing proudly in front of Adil’s artwork.

Adil’s story reflects the power of connection. Each time we come together to uplift our neighbors, we strengthen the fabric of our city. And your support helps AAFSC continue to meet urgent needs in programs like our English classes, while creating pathways to stability and opportunity for families across New York.
