News4Jax: 13-Year-Old Advocates for COVID-19 Vaccine Among Florida’s Arab-American Community

August 13, 2021

One 13-year-old, Dana Aljubouri, is using her platform as an Arab-American to educate her community about the COVID-19 vaccine. “My family back in Iraq, they still do not have access to the vaccine, especially my cousins who are my age,” Dana Aljubouri said. “I feel privileged here to take the vaccine (and) encourage people to take it so we can save many lives.”

COVID-19 data among Arab-American communities is statistically low and the Center for Disease Control does not currently record vaccination rates among Arab-American communities. Through our COVID-19 Impact Study, we’ve found that linguistically and culturally competent resources targeting COVID-19 vaccine outreach in New York City need to be enhanced. Basma, heading into eighth grade, said this shouldn’t stop people in her community from getting the vaccine.
